Movement in Time is a slow-moving,
atmospheric piece. In the tape part, extreme registers and sounds that,
although suggestive, cannot be unequivocally linked to a natural or
instrumental sound source leave its interpretation wide open. The live
performers are asked to contribute to and enhance these qualities
through the use of isolated, anti-melodic gestures that grow out of and
tie into the sounds of the tape part. They are very rarely asked to
assert an individual voice separate from the tape, but a notable
exception is the bass clarinet multiphonic solo shortly after the
mid-point of the piece.
For this piece, and much else, I am particularly
indebted to Christos Hatzis. Without his suggestion upon hearing the
tape part of the possible instrumentation, and his insistence - which
took some time for me to understand - that I not “ruin the piece by
writing too much ‘music’”, the piece would have been far different...
and most likely far less interesting.
